The PAU-Krishi Vigyan Kendra, Sangrur organised an awareness seminar on crop residue management for students of Savtantarta Sangrami Jathedar Kartar Singh Darvesh School of Eminence, Sangrur on 20.11.2025 under the aegis of Punjab Agricultural University and ICAR-ATARI, Zone-I, Ludhiana, in which more than 200 students participated. On this occasion, poster making, speech declamation, skit, poem and song recitation competitions were held for students highlighting the adverse effects of crop residue burning on human health and the environment.
Dr. Mandeep Singh, Incharge, Krishi Vigyan Kendra, Sangrur briefed the students about the harmful effects of crop residue burning on soil health, human health and environment. He further deliberated the students about the motive of awareness camps being organized in the school and emphasized on the importance of environmental stewardship, urging students to take active roles in promoting sustainable farming practices.
Dr. Sunil Kumar, AP (FMPE), KVK Sangrur deliberated on various techniques and advantages of in-situ paddy residue management. Further, he shared details of different machines like use of Super SMS fitted combine for harvesting of paddy crop, Happy Seeder, Super Seeder, Mulcher, Cutter-cum-spreader and Mould Board plough for paddy residue management in the field itself.
Mr. Jaspal Singh, Senior Lecturer, briefed about the history and legacy of the school and highlighted that the school was established with the vision of providing inclusive education to the children of the region, drawing inspiration from the life and contribution of Jathedar Kartar Singh Darvesh, a revered freedom fighter known for his commitment to social welfare. He further explained how the institution’s “School of Eminence” status reflects its commitment to academic excellence, holistic development, and nation-building.
To further spread awareness on the issue, a series of competitions were organized by Dr. Vitasta, Assistant Professor (Home Science), KVK Sangrur, Ms. Meenakshi, Science mistress and other staff members of the school. The participants creatively highlighted the harmful impacts of paddy residue burning through their entries and winners of the competitions were felicitated by KVK Sangrur.
In the end, Mr. Jaspal Singh, Senior lecturer thanked the KVK staff for organising the seminar. Mrs. Harpreet Kaur, Math Mistress, Mrs. Anita Batra, Science Mistress and the whole staff of the school was present at the event.
